Randy Weston African Rhythms Free Concert for Sankofa Children ~ March 21, 2015
Randy Weston along side his smooth jazz band created a night filled with musical intelligence and rhythmic renditions of classic jazz music. It is a great honor to be chosen out of many other schools to receive a grant allowing Weston to play for free at Sankofa. On the night of the show, the place became filled with parents, students, graduates, and teachers who all swayed to the beat of the music. At the end of the concert it became so endearing to watch well thought-out and rehearsed chants done by children of all ages. These children not only learn by heart the 50 states of the US, but they also learned the 54 countries of Africa. It's amazing to witness because they know way more about Africa by just knowing the countries than most people in America regardless of race. They speak with such a large sense of pride, confidence, and will. The message these children recite every week positively influences these children on a daily basis. They recognize and appreciate the sacrifices and achievements made by their predecessors. With this knowledge, they have a stronger sense of self and self worth starting from a young age that will stay with them till they're grown. What a joy it is to see such strong cultural pride and eclectic intelligence in this growing generation.
